Xpu-ha to Cancun

Today we would head to Cancun, but stop in Tulum to see the ruins first. Since Terry was in town, we wanted to take advantage of some gringo touro time. The party ended the night before around 2:30am, but we were all surprisingly up before 8:30 ready for breakfast. Terry had already found his way up to Cory's place for coffee, so we all invited ourselves up to use her stove to heat up some leftovers from the party and for coffee ourselves. Eric, Terry, Cory, Peter and I all enjoyed a nice breakfast of stir-fry potatoes, onions and tomatoes before we headed out around 11.

We drove 30 minutes south to the ruins of Tulum which we had been to 5 years ago but were interested in seeing again, especially since Terry had never been there. Tulum ruins are beautiful, set on a water front view and a very green plot of grass. There are very large iguanas crawling around everywhere, and the entire scenery makes for some great photos. However, I think we were all feeling a little run down from the night before and struggled to enjoy ourselves as we walked up hill in the thick, humid weather. We were able to get some good shots and have 20 minute walk around before it started pouring down rain. This was no surprise, we knew the storm was coming in, we just had no idea how bad it was going to be. Instead of waiting the storm out like most people, we walked all the way back to the car since we decided we were done anyway, and managed our way through the storm. By the time we got back we were drenched, though a little bit hungry. We decided on a Thai place that Cory recommended the night before right down the road. Soaking wet, we stopped for a bite to eat.

We watched this guy eat at least 4 of these fallen fruits. What a fatty!

 I love curry!

Afterwards we drove the hour and a half up to Cancun. By the way, Eric and Terry rented a car to drive around for the week so we didn't all have to squeeze on the bike ;) We left the bike in Xpu-ha for Simon and Lisa to watch until our return.

We got stuck in traffic so we didnt get in until after 6. We all showered (not together) and got ready to go out. We spent a good hour in our room having pre dinner drinks and enjoying the view of our balcony.

We walked the strip looking for a place to eat. As it turns out, Cancun's hotel zone strip is pretty small, but they really make the most out of what they have. We chose to eat at Carlos & Charlie's, a great place everyone should go if looking for a great time. The waiters/waitresses really engage the crowd; they have music playing and specific songs for congo lines, line dancing, etc. During one of the songs, the male waiters asked random female guests (including me) for a dance and brought them outside in the courtyard. Another song asked for everyone in the restaurant to stand on their chairs and dance. Then came the YMCA, and then a completely inappropriate drag of Christine Liu to the fake stripper pole. This place is family friendly, I guess you are supposed to do something funny or simply sexy on the pole. I politely declined.

We had planned to go to Coco Bongos after dinner, but after two of those tall drinks we all smartly decided we didn't need an open bar. Instead, we looked for another simple bar to go to, but as I was looking at Yelp for direction, I saw Eric and Terry quickly fading. We decided we would call it a night and grab some water instead. On the way back from the Oxxo, Eric and Terry both carried a 4 ltr water bottle each, though they made it seem like they were carrying a large man each. They both found themselves in the grass a few times walking along the sidewalk, which provided an excellent show for the rest of the trip home. Around 1, we found ourselves in bed listening to the clubs thumping nearby. But of course Eric and Terry heard nothing of this..
